Become Sober Secure

Nurture your garden of secure attachment

I’m on a mission.

I’m the author of The Mind-Body Guide to the Twelve Steps and Sober Secure, and I want to bring everything we know about mind-body healing to the world of recovery.

I want to imbue addiction treatment with the deepest wisdom from the fields of psychology, somatics, neurobiology, and spirituality. I want to make recovery spaces more trauma informed and attuned to what really helps people heal.

I wrote Sober Secure for people in recovery, for their partners, for clinicians working in addiction treatment, and for anyone wishing to cultivate strong and vibrant relationships through the power of secure attachment.

“This is a book that is long overdue, a book I wish I had when I first got into recovery in 1994 and every year since.”
—Dan Griffin, author of A Man’s Way through the Twelve Steps

The Sober Secure Principles

Love matters:
Attachment is critical to our survival. We all need love, safety, attuned touch, and a sense of belonging.

Love heals:
Underlying addiction are early attachment wounds. The remedy for addiction is love.

Love is divine:
When we connect with the power of attachment, we also connect with a power greater than ourselves, the force of love.

Love is sacred:
All aspects of relationship—including touch, sexuality, and difficult conversations—can be infused with reverence and a sense of the sacred.

Love is embodied:
Attachment isn’t something that we reach through cognitive understanding alone. It needs to be felt and experienced.

Love is life-force:
As our nervous system achieves greater regulation, we start to expand our capacity for joy and presence. We connect with the greater web of life that supports our recovery and that our recovery in turn supports.

Love can blossom:
No matter your background, you can develop your capacity for secure attachment.
